About

My name is Gene and I’m a gamer. I live on a farm in northern Indiana just outside of the town known as New Carlisle. I graduated from high school and spent a year in college working on my computer sciences degree before taking a break (which I’m currently still on) to find a job and get some funds saved for later in life — I intend to eventually finish up my computer sciences degree (it’s only a two-year degree) and then go for a degree in English (which I dearly love working with and learning about).

I spend the majority of my free time developing various materials for the, now obsolete, 3.5 revision of Dungeons & Dragons — I’d like to think I have a decent eye when it comes to balance (though I’m sure there are those who would disagree, but that’s life I suppose). I’ve been playing for a long time (well, being in my twenties, I classify fourteen-plus years as a long time) and DMing for just about as long.

That’s not to say that all of my RPG experience lies with D&D, quite the opposite in fact, I’ve played a good number of other systems as well. Here’s a small sampling of all of the RPGs I can remember playing and a quick thought or two on them as well:

  • Arcana Evolved
    • Very fun system, I played in an arena over on RPoL ages ago; one of these days I’ll run a game.
  • Castles & Crusades
    • Really like the system; still waiting for the Castle Keeper’s Guide to get released.
  • D20 Future/Modern/Past
    • Not a bad system but I’m not a huge fan.
  • Dungeons & Dragons (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3.5, and 4th edition)
    • 2nd edition is my favorite (mostly because of the awesome campaign settings) but I have the most experience with 3.5.
  • Exalted (2nd edition)
    • Don’t much care for it too much; it’s got some nifty concepts, though.
  • OSRIC
    • A most awesome concept to be sure; I have yet to play a game but I look forward to doing so one of these days.
  • Pathfinder RPG
    • More or less 3.5 with a crap-ton of houserules thrown in. I like it a lot; though I prefer my houseruled version of 3.5 to it. Still, I probably prefer it to stock 3.5 (assuming no sourcebooks beyond the core three, of course).
  • Star Wars (d20)
    • It’s fun enough, but I abhor how the only viable classes are the Jedi classes. I also dislike the lack of long-term goodies to get for your characters and the vitality/wound system annoys the heck out of me.
  • Star Wars (SAGA)
    • Very fun system, different enough from the d20 game to stand on its own, but with enough similarities to be easy for anyone with experience with the system to pick up and play. I also really like the talent trees that each class gets; really adds diversity.
  • Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay (Dark Heresy, Rogue Trader, and so on)
    • Interesting system. I have a love/hate relationship with it. I love how the classes and combat works, but I hate how you’re basically forced into one role or another. I like how brutal the game is, but I hate how Psykers are more or less useless early on. It’s not bad, though; I’ve enjoyed my time spent playing it.
